Strange Currencies Interview

What’s your sound & style?

Something strange, something eloquent, refreshing, rhythmical and blissful. From our acoustic sets to full on indie rock/funk/blues sounds. Strange Currencies sound like…Midlander, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, progressive REM with a splash of Tenacious D and a Dash of Foo Fighters.

With the sonorous vocals of PP Johnson. This is rock music for the soul. The multi instrumentation of Claudine West emits rhythmical eloquence with alternative undertones. Lyrical diversity walks between parallel lines of the hauntingly uplifting. This creative originals band radiate powerful live performances, invoking a zephyr that turns into a hurricane. In 2017 the banded expanded and developed into a fuller sound with roots in rock, funk and blues. We also just had an xmas number 1 on Ourstage as Rock Grand Final Winners and Indie Rock Winners for ‘Carnival Of Fools.’

Who’s in the band?

Vocals: PP Johnson (Paul Phillip Johnson)
Guitar: Andrew Death
Bass: Steve Canner
Harmonica: Robert ‘Too Tall’ Batchelor
Mandolin & Drums/Multi-instruments: Claudine West

What’s your history?

The History: (Formed in April 2016.) Two ex-rock band members; One an insanely talented multi-instrumentalist Claudine West (The Idolins, Subway Circus) and the other a stunningly powerful vocalist. PP Johnson (No Empire, Subway Circus).

Initially as an acoustic duo we began performing at local open mic nights to promote our music and have worked with local promoters such as ‘Roots Acoustic’ ‘Bad Time For Bonzo’ and ‘I’m Not From London.’

We then went on to complete a 27 date acoustic tour of the Midlands.

The Derby/Nottingham hybrid formation and expansion of sound and styles in 2017 saw the addition of talented Derby guitarist, Andrew Death and master of grooves Steve Canner on bass. Robert ‘Too Tall’ Batchelor regularly joins in on harmonica (we found him at a live mic night at The Doghouse in Carlton, and asked him to record on the track ‘I Don’t Dance.’) He regularly joins us onstage. Claudine West is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist/composer and songwriter. Often performing with mandolin and drums on stage and keyboards and acoustic guitars in the studio.

What are you working on?

We released our debut ‘eclectic’ album ‘Making Monsters’ November 2017. We are about to go into the studio to record an EP. We are also working on new material for a new album.
